Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma announces the launch of anti-hypertension drug "AVAPRO Tablets 200mg"

Osaka, Japan, June 12, 2013 － Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. (DSP) (Headquarters: Osaka, Japan; President: Masayo Tada) launches "AVAPRO^® Tablets 200mg", a new dosage form of "AVAPRO^®" (generic name: irbesartan), a long-acting ARB (angiotensin II receptor antagonist) as of June 12.

Irbesartan is a long-acting ARB (angiotensin II receptor antagonist) with a 24-hour-lasting blood pressure-lowering effect, originally created by Sanofi (France) and has high anti-hypertensive effect in mild to severe hypertension. AVAPRO^® was launched by DSP in Japan in July, 2008 as "AVAPRO^® Tablets 50mg" and "AVAPRO^® Tablets 100mg". It was launched overseas in 1997, and based on the large-scale clinical trials IDNT and IRMA2, which are often cited in major international guidelines, this drug is recognized as one of the top ARB brands with evidence for its effect in a wide range of stages covering both early and overt nephropathy.

DSP hopes that the addition of the new dosage form with higher dose of 200mg to the AVAPRO^® lineup will contribute to improvement in the medication adherence of patients.

DSP also markets other anti-hypertension drugs such as "AIMIX^®" and "AMLODIN^®". Launching AVAPRO^® Tablets 200mg in Japan, DSP hopes to make further contributions to the treatment of hypertension.
