Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Completes Construction on New Chemistry Research Building

Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. (DSP) (Headquarters: Osaka, Japan; President: Masayo Tada) announces that the construction of a new Chemistry Research Building at the Osaka Research Center (Konohana-ku, Osaka City, Osaka, Japan) is completed on June 4, 2013.

The New Chemistry Research Building has a total floor area of 16,322m². It will consolidate the work of the Drug Discovery Division, as well as the Process Chemistry Research & Development Laboratories and Analytical Research & Development Laboratories that have been dispersed to the Osaka Research Center and Osaka Center (Fukushima-ku, Osaka City, Osaka, Japan), and the Central Research Laboratories (Suita City, Osaka, Japan). With this new establishment, DSP aims to improve the efficiency of the series of operations in research and development from drug target discovery to applications for manufacture and marketing approval.

The four points below outline the basic concept of this construction.

  • 1. Consolidation of departments: Aiming to consolidate and optimize chemistry research related departments assigned to drug discovery research, industrialization research and quality management of investigational new drugs we developed a base that maximizes the overall strength of the company.
  • 2. Creation of innovative research environments: In order to actively promote communication, we have installed video conference rooms to connect to other sites worldwide, a break counter as a space for casual research discussion, etc. with the aim to develop a research environment where highly creative drugs are originated.
  • 3. Facilities that ensure safety and security: The facility was constructed with a seismic isolation structure and a method of construction with foundation improvement which can withstand damage caused by earthquakes and liquefaction. Additionally, we have introduced a security system to strengthen the management of access to the facility and the management of keys for chemical reagent storage.
  • 4. A work environment that considers people and the Earth: Use of low airflow fume hoods, installation of solar panels, introduction of lighting and air conditioning with regard to energy efficiency, active use of natural light, etc.

Operations at the new Chemistry Research Building are scheduled to start in July 2013. The expected total cost is about 6.4 billion yen.

Through the construction of this new Chemistry Research Building, DSP aims to further promote efficient research and development, and facilitate the creation of highly original drugs in areas of high unmet medical needs.
