Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Exhibits Heritages of Doshomachi - "The Pharmacy Street" Along with the Company's Century-Old History

Osaka, Japan, March 25, 2014 - Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. ("DSP") (Head Office: Osaka, Japan; President: Masayo Tada) announced today that it opened an exhibition space at the entrance of its Osaka Head Office at which general public is welcome to take a look at the evolution of Doshomachi Street where DSP was born over a century ago.

DSP was established in May 1987 (the 30th Year of Meiji Period) in Doshomachi, Osaka. Through over 100 years of devotion in the research and development, manufacture and marketing activities of pharmaceuticals, it has evolved into a globally-operating discovery-based pharmaceuticals group. Doshomachi Street, our birthplace, had been well-known as "the pharmacy street" in Osaka already in the Edo Period. It would be our immense pleasure and privilege if a wider spectrum of general public visit the exhibition space to deepen interest in and enhance understanding of the Pharmacy Street Doshomachi along with the paths we have walked over the years, based constantly in the native town.

The exhibition is designed to offer an easy-to-understand illustration of our founding spirit, the contributions Dr. Nagayoshi Nagai*1 made to the advancement of pharmaceutical industry in Japan, manufacture and supply of pure, genuine pharmaceuticals, as well as the profile of DSP today working to discover innovative new drugs. The exhibits include: miniature pharmaceutical plant, text panels, movies and slide shows.

Opening date: Tuesday, March 25, 2014

DSP hopes that the exhibition space it opened today will contribute to the continued prosperity of Doshomachi Street.

*1 Dr. Nagai discovered ephedrine, a bronchodilator. He was at one time technical consultant of DSP (then, Dainippon Pharmaceutical). He made a great contribution to the development of chemical and pharmaceutical industries in Japan. Having served as the first President of the Tokyo Pharmacology Association (the present Pharmaceutical Society of Japan), he also played an instrumental role in laying the ground for the nascent pharmaceutical research in Japan.
*2 These two pieces of equipment were officially authorized as "chemical heritage" by the Chemical Heritage Committee of the Chemical Society of Japan in March 2014.
