【Supporting High School Students via “The 4th SDGs Quest Mirai Koshien Tournament”】

The final ceremony of the 4th “SDGs Quest Mirai Koshien”* Kansai Area Tournament was held on March 11, 2023.

Based on our desire to support high school students’ new ideas to solve social issues, Sumitomo Pharma has participated as a special sponsor in the Tournament since the first event in fiscal 2019.

For Fiscal 2022 Sumitomo Pharma Award, we selected “Salt Intake Reduction Program: Let’s work together to cut salt in diet! Let’s work together to prevent heart failure!” devised by the Shin Mt. FUJI team from Shitennoji Senior High School.

We rated the team highly for their idea to focus attention on the social issue that the heart failure rates are on the rise due to an aging society and come up with an idea to provide food education as early as elementary school in order to prevent heart failure by limiting salt intake, which is relatively high among Japanese people. We think the questionnaire results that food education for the elementary school students had positive effects not only on themselves but also on their parents, indicate that this attempt is significant in terms of continuity and has some promise. We believe this idea will be an important step toward solving the social issue.

We will continue to work on developing the next generation and addressing the challenge of contributing to the achievement of SDGs in collaboration with various stakeholders.

*“SDGs Quest Mirai Koshien” is a tournament in which high school student teams devise action ideas for solving social issues and explain them in presentation.
