【Sumitomo Pharma Conducts Lessons on Bioethics (3) at Chiben Gakuen Wakayama Senior High School and Rokko Island High School】
In August and September, Sumitomo Pharma conducted lessons taught alongside teachers according to its original program about genome analysis and heredity at Chiben Gakuen Wakayama Senior High School and Kobe Municipal Rokko Island High School. In these lessons, students consider how they would make decisions on bioethical issues that lie ahead in the development of science and technology.
The following are comments from some of the students who participated: "I noticed that even in scientific discussions, rational judgment alone is not always correct, and I realized how narrow my perspective was." and "By thinking about potential future scenariosand sharing the risks and benefits with others, I was very enjoyable to learn ideas that I would never have thought of on my own." Thus, the company felt that the students who participated were able to think of the content of the lessons as their own problem and learn deeply from the dialogue through this program.
In the career education section that followed the section on bioethics, we received feedback such as "I felt highly motivated because I believe that creating pharmaceuticals leads to people's wellbeing and that my current studies will be useful." We were glad to know that students sympathized with our company's Mission.
As part of its social contribution activities, Sumitomo Pharma is engaged in activities to support the development of the next generation through the utilization of its experience in creating pharmaceuticals. As one of these activities, the company has since fiscal 2012 been focusing on lessons conducted at junior high and high schools in which its employees serve as lecturers.
