【Sumitomo Pharma Conducts Lessons on Bioethics (7) at Waseda Setsuryo Senior High School】

In February 2024, Sumitomo Pharma conducted lessons taught alongside teachers according to its original program about genome analysis and heredity at Waseda Setsuryo Senior High School. In these lessons, students consider how they would make decisions on issues that lie ahead in the development of science and technology.

The following are comments from some of the students who participated: "Through the group work, I was able to incorporate not only my own opinions but also those of others and expand my perspective on my own thoughts," and "I really appreciate this opportunity since I never had the chance to proactively talk to or discuss with others before." Thus, the company felt that the students have become realized the importance of dialogue with others through this program.

In the career education section that followed the section on bioethics, we received feedback such as "Although I aspired to become a pharmacist, I was surprised to learn the various professions related to pharmaceuticals. I wanted to explore each of them in more detail." We would be delighted if our lessons could spark interest in pharmaceutical research and development.

As part of its social contribution activities, Sumitomo Pharma is engaged in activities to support the development of the next generation through the utilization of its experience in creating pharmaceuticals. As one of these activities, the company has since fiscal 2012 been focusing on lessons conducted at junior high and high schools in which its employees serve as lecturers.
